Does Pool Design Matter?

Recently I saw some simple concept art depicting different features you could incorporate into a swimming pool, and it captured my imagination immediately! I love how simply changing the shape of the stairs can totally transform a pool’s image.

For example, check out these before and after photos of a job Denscot renovated a couple summers ago.

You can here the three-tiered rounded steps (sometimes called wedding cake steps) which protrude into the main area of the pool and rather distract from the overall pool design.

By straightening and elongating the three steps, this increased the swimmable area of the pool, and gives the appearance of a wider pool as well.

Now, I judge almost every pool I come across against the neighborhood pool I grew up with in North Carolina, whether I mean to or not! Was that charming 3’-5’ deep pool the premium standard? No, but still, in my mind, nothing tops! Because of that, I always forget that pools can (and should) have more than one entrance and exit point, and that those access points don’t always have to be traditional steps. Consider this fun free form pool that belongs to a long-time client.

You can see the raised Gunite spa with a waterfall that spills into the pool, and the tanning ledge, bedecked with lounge seating. Between the wall of the spa and the tanning ledge you can see a few little steps. This is perfect for an easy transition from spa to pool, pool to spa, tanning ledge to pool, pool to tanning ledge… you get the idea. Now, on the other side of the tanning ledge, they have run a long bench around the edge of the pool, and it transitions into a series of steps deeper into the water. This serves a dual purpose of entry and exit, and additional seating when hosting a pool party! You can see the steps here across from the spa.

While we’re visiting this particular pool, let’s talk briefly about tanning ledges. These are a great way to have more “pool” without having more pool to fill with more water. They are an ideal place to sunbathe, as aforementioned, and personally I think these are fabulous splashpads for the toddlers and babies in your life. They create a space for additional lighting or bubbling fountains, and visually make the transition from patio to pool very appealing.

Now, another Denscot favorite is this Grecian inspired pool. Note how the diving board end balances the stairwell, giving it the feel of no wasted space. The steps on one end are the perfect place for dipping your toes, or again supervising little ones in the shallow water, while at the deep end of the pool, there is a Gunite bench on either side of the diving board, providing a place to rest, or an exit point for tired bathers.

One of the benefits of Gunite is that it is so versatile. If you want a rectangular pool, you have the flexibility to make the inside as untraditional as you want. If freeform is your style, curved steps may be a way to accentuate the ripples of the water. Don’t be afraid to mix and match function with funky, because that’s what sets your pool apart from all the rest!
