Sand filters, Cartridge filters, DE filters, oh my! No matter the type of filter you have, regular inspection and routine resets are essential to keep your filter in optimal condition, and ensure your water is being cleaned properly.
There are different methods for different types of filters, naturally. However, fairly universal is the use of a filter cleaning solution.
Denscot’s typical filter reset service includes applying our Regal Filter Renew product. Sand filters do a great job filtering small materials out of your pool water before sending it back to the pool. The Regal Filter Renew is intended to help break up all the oils, lotions, and other slimes that build up in the filter, allowing you to back wash all that out of the filter. When this gunk is removed from the filter, your chlorine, or other sanitizer of choice, can be better put to use sanitizing the rest of the water in the pool, rather than being used up sanitizing the filter.
The Renew product gets added to either skimmer or pump, and the system is turned on just long enough for the product to reach the filter. Once everything it turned off again and drains closed, I like to let that filter soak with that product for about half an hour—you could do longer, but I would not do less than that.

Before After
Once it’s sufficiently soaked, all it takes is another backwash, rinse, and backwash—you’ll see all that gunk flow out of the filter. Some may make it back into the pool, but now that it’s been broken down, it won’t last long against your sanitizer.
Whenever you purchase a new pool and spa chemical or cleaning product, you should always read the instructions on the label. Specific instructions can vary product to product and brand to brand. We love Regal for it’s consistency and quality, and that is why it is the product our certified technicians use in the field on all of their pools.
