Water Safety-It's May in Full Swing!

May is National Water Safety Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of water safety and preventing drowning incidents. Whether you're planning a trip to the beach, a day at the pool, or simply enjoying water activities at home, it's crucial to stay informed and take necessary precautions. Here are some essential tips and facts to help you and your loved ones stay safe around water.

Why Water Safety Matters

Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-4 and remains a significant risk for people of all ages. Every year, countless people in the United States die from unintentional drowning, with many more experiencing non-fatal drowning incidents. By understanding the risks and implementing safety measures, we can reduce these numbers and enjoy water activities safely.

Top Water Safety Tips

  1. Learn to Swim: Enroll in swimming lessons to build water competency. Knowing how to swim can significantly reduce the risk of drowning for children ages 1-4.

  2. Supervise Constantly: Always keep a close eye on children and weak swimmers. Drowning can happen quickly and silently, so active supervision is key. Do not count on hearing trouble. 

  3. Use Life Jackets: Ensure everyone wears a properly fitted life jacket when boating or participating in water sports. Life jackets can be lifesavers in emergencies. 

  4. Swim in Designated Areas: Only swim in areas supervised by lifeguards and follow posted safety signs and flags. This will minimize number of risk factors like currents, watercraft, and negligence. 

  5. Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol impairs judgment, balance, and coordination, increasing the risk of drowning. Avoid drinking alcohol before or during water activities. 

  6. Know the Weather: Check weather conditions before heading out. Avoid swimming during storms or when there are strong currents.

  7. Learn CPR: Knowing CPR can make a critical difference in an emergency. Consider taking a CPR course to be prepared. Consider the peace of mind of having a skill you'll never need, vs needing a skill you do not have. 

Water Safety Activities for National Water Safety Month

  • Take the Safe Swimmer Pledge: Commit to practicing water safety and encourage others to do the same.
  • Participate in International Water Safety Day: On May 15th, spread awareness about drowning prevention and educate others on water safety. 
  • Join the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson: This global event on June 22nd aims to teach children and adults the importance of learning to swim. 

Water activities can be fun and enjoyable, but safety should always come first. By following these tips and spreading awareness during National Water Safety Month, we can help prevent drowning incidents and ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time around water.
