Water Safety Resources

Unintentional drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under the age of 4. A mere three inches of water is sometimes all it takes, and we all know other accidents like slipping can happen when even less water is puddled or pooled where it shouldn’t be.

National Water Safety Month is dedicated to educating adults and children alike on being aware and alert when around all types of water.

Keeping young children safe can be as simple as having them wear appropriately fitting life preservers, swimming with a buddy, and never swimming without adult supervision.

For adults, never swim while intoxicated, never swim alone, and always observe changes in weather patterns which could affect your environment.

Water safety encompasses more than just drowning awareness and prevention. It can include swim lessons, tips on how to install “layers” of protection around your pool area, how to respond in case of an emergency, ensuring you have Coast Guard approved life preservers available while boating or enjoying other recreational water activities, and adjusting your activity to fit the condition or shallowness of the water.

There are countless online resources. Some that we have found very helpful are from The American Red Cross, and from Pentair, a pool equipment company.

Denscot also provides free educational brochures written and produced by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), of which we are a member. The next time you visit our Retail Center, ask our store staff about the different brochures we offer, as well as the children’s coloring sheets and activity workbooks we carry to help you start the important conversation about water safety with your loved ones.
